How are antioxidants rated?

There are many factors to look at ...

Firstly,  are we talking about what’s the Best in General?

Or, what’s best for you?

 


Best in General

For Best in General, there is nothing to-date that states that one antioxidant is better than another. It can be rated by the strength of the antioxidant. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that only “strong” antioxidants will give you the best "effectiveness".

Antioxidants should also be considered in terms of:

  • what it can specifically target (e.g. anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-aging, etc.),
  • how it works,
  • how it works with other antioxidants,
  • how they  work together, etc, etc.

After all, antioxidants work best as a group and, different “groupings” are best for different situations. Some are also more effective with the support of non-antioxidant nutrients, such as selenium - the Network Boosters.


The strength of the antioxidants can be measured by ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity).

  • While United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in 2012, has withdrawn this as a measure of the effectiveness of antioxidants from the consumption of the foods, it is not totally dismissed as a measure.
  • it can be still be used as a comparison across the food types.


Alternative measures:

  • Folin–Ciocalteu Reagent (FCR).
  • Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC). Similar to ORAC measure, it measures antioxidant capacities.



Best for Oneself

For Best for Oneself, these are some of the factors to be considered:


  • Is it consumed for a specific purpose\need or, for general health?
  • What does your body in need of most, at any point in time?  That is to say, if you are given the best antioxidant but in fact, the body needs another type, then the best antioxidant may not be the best for you, at that point in time.
  •  Antioxidants are a type of nutrients that works best as a group – hence, what then is the best combination for you?
  •  And so on …

 

All in all, do bear in mind that moderation is still key, and that, any “best prescription” is still dependent on the best diagnosis. Even with the best diagnosis, you still need to be mindful of the risks and benefits of any “prescription”.

What Are the Best Antioxidants Found in Foods?

So, while we are on the subject of what are the best antioxidants, and since antioxidants exist is a lot (if not most of our foods), I thought it might be of interest to some folks, to know what are the best antioxidants in our foods. 


Many literature propose different “best of” for each category.

I will attempt to provide the “best of” in each of the category - based on the reasons proposed in each of the literature and websites. However, because antioxidants are relatively new (nutrients) “discovery”, it is still evolving as more and more  are being discovered,  and the lists will change with new developments.

 

Do bear in mind that while the following are the Top 10s or Top 5s :

  • They may not necessarily be listed in sequential order  - they could all be equally important!
  • Those that didn’t make the list of the Tops (10 or 5 - due to the author’s limitation of the numbering), could be just as equally potent\powerful!
  • While those that made the list may be the more known foods, there are also foods from local regions that could also be as equally potent\powerful!

 

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, antioxidants work best as a group.
